About the Artist and RAMA AZUL
John's artistic journey began in Bogotá, Colombia, nurtured by a family deeply rooted in music, dance, art, and the captivating power of storytelling. His grandfather, "Polo," a man of remarkable charisma, was a master storyteller who not only spun tales but also instilled in John a profound love for life, humor, unwavering optimism, and an tireless work ethic. These cherished values continue to illuminate John's personal and artistic pursuits.
Beyond Polo's influence, John's grandmother, "Marujita," a woman who appreciated art more than anyone he's ever known, filled their home with meticulously chosen prints of masterpieces by Rembrandt, and Da Vinci's "The Last Supper" always held a place of honor in their dining room. She curated an exquisite collection of German porcelain, including rare Hutsche Router (Bavaria) pieces, alongside magnificent Italian Capodimonte. Her discerning eye also extended to captivating prints from India, each telling its own story that she would bring back to Bogotá from her extensive travels. Beyond her exquisite taste in art and home décor, Marujita was a true fashionista, renowned for successfully running one of the most distinguished and finest boutiques in Bogotá. Her vibrant spirit and cultivated eye continue to be a profound inspiration for RAMA AZUL.
While art was always a thread in John’s life, a distinct spark ignited during art history classes in college, revealing a passion that had long awaited discovery. The profound loss of his sister, a talented filmmaker, left an undeniable void, yet it simultaneously fueled a deep desire to honor her creative spirit through his own artistic expression.
Since 2019, John has found solace and renewed purpose in painting, expertly weaving his rich cultural heritage with the invaluable guidance of his mentor, Shin Young Rho, from Ashcan Art Studio in New York. Under her tutelage, John's skills have flourished, empowering his unique artistic voice to take flight.
Today, John's vibrant folk art graces both wood and canvas, beautifully capturing the warmth of human connection, life's small joys, and a poignant touch of bittersweet remembrance. His work, commissioned by individuals and organizations such as the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and West Point lacrosse programs, transcends mere aesthetics. It invites viewers to connect with the inherent beauty, compelling stories, and enduring resilience that reside within us all.
RAMA AZUL is more than just art; it's an invitation to connect.
